laser hair removal, electrolysis, electrology training

Laser Training Curriculum

Starting January 2002 the Rocky Mountain College of Laser will be discontinuing our Electrology training classes.

Laser classes will be taught once a month only. The charge for the 4 day class will be $3000. Pre-requisite vocational backgrounds (i.e.: nursing, aesthetician, electrologist, etc) are recommended but not required.  Dates will be posted for 2002 by October 2001.

The Rocky Mountain College has designed this unique, extensive and personalized program for the professional seeking a certified laser specialist (C.L.S.) position, in conjunction with a physician. Attendees will familiarize themselves with the numerous lasers in the marketplace today, learning the advantages and disadvantages of each of these lasers. Students will ascertain the different skin and hair types, which will enable them to program laser parameters, amplifying the laser's efficacy. Laser does not completely replace electrolysis in the hair removal service field, but for those wishing to expand their knowledge in this field may consider becoming an electrologist as well.

I. LASER PHYSICS, SAFETY AND CONTRAINDICATIONS
A. Laser Physics - Learn what makes the laser work
B. Laser Safety - Treatment protocol and proper safety equipment
C. Contraindications - Treatment precautions in regards to laser

To instruct students in the importance of laser physics, safety and any contraindications that may arise in a treatment setting. This course must be applied first for the safety and welfare of both the student and the instructor(s).

II. PATIENT SELECTION, TISSUE INTERACTION AND PATIENT OBSERVATION
A. Patient Selection - Which patients will/will not benefit
B. Tissue Interaction - What to expect on the skin during after treatment
C. Patient Observation - Observing laser treatments prior to hands-on

Finding the correct parameters for a patient is an essential aspect of providing a treatment that is both effective and tolerable. Students will be able to observe tissue interaction in relation to the laser treatment, prior to hands-on application.

III. HAIR AND SKIN ANALYSIS, HAIR BIOLOGY AND GROWTH CYCLES
A. Hair Analysis - What type of hair will benefit most from laser treatments
B. Skin Analysis - What type of skin will benefit most from laser treatments
C. Hair Biology - Histology of the hair
D. Hair Growth Cycles - Anagen, catagen and telogen hair cycles
E. Different Types of Hair - Vellus, accelerated vellus and terminal hair types

Finding the correct parameters for the patient's skin and hair type is a necessity in providing efficacy of the laser. Students will be able to review hair biology and growth cycles, then be able to determine what energy level should be used in treating patients.

IV. LASER PARAMETERS, WAVELENGTH, CHROMOPHORES, PULSE DURATION
A. Laser Parameters - Learning the intensities of your laser
B. Laser Wavelengths - The depth of penetration controls laser efficacy
C. Laser Chromophores - What attracts or repels the laser energy/fluence and why
D. Pulse Duration  - How to control treatment via pulse duration

The students will be instructed on the importance in determining the proper amounts of energy (fluence), laser attraction, depth of penetration and dynamic cooling in respect to the patient's skin and hair type.

V. HAIR REMOVAL TECHNIQUES, POLICIES/PROCEDURES, AND M.D. INVOLVEMENT
A. Hair Removal Techniques - Different types of hair removal modalities
B. Policies & Procedures - State and national policies and review
C. Physician involvement - Treatment protocol in the treatment room

Participants will be educated on proper protocol when working with the physician.

VI. PRE/POST PATIENT CARE, TOPICAL APPLICATIONS, HANDS-ON PRACTICE
A. Pretreatment and Post Treatment Care
B. Topical Applications - Prescription topical anesthetics explained
C. Hands-On Practice - Working in detail with the patient

Hands-on teaching with regard to patient care, applying a topical applications, if necessary, and patient protocol.

VII. MARKETING, ADVERTISING AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS
A. Laser Marketing - How to market laser vs. Electrology
B. Laser Advertising - How to get the most out of your advertising budget
C. Ethical Considerations - What you can and cannot do, Re: Medical lasers

Sharing documented success in marketing, advertising and ethical considerations in regards to laser hair removal.

VIII. OPTIONAL INTERNSHIP AND IN-DEPTH HANDS-ON PRACTICE
*** This feature has been temporarily discontinued to allow students from outside of Colorado to return home sooner. All necessary lab times will be incorporated into the week's class scheduling.
A. Internship Participation - View and participate in day-to-day laser activities at one of our local laser treatment clinics
B. In-Depth Hands-On Practice - View live demonstrations on actual patients

Hands-on teaching with regard to patient care, applying a topical applications, if necessary, and patient protocol.

*** Lorenzo Kunze, M.E., C.L.S., is available for students either during the course week or afterward for a confidential, targeted, one-on-one business consultation by appointment only in lieu of the discontinuance of the internship program.

The Rocky Mountain College neither actively assists nor guarantees job placement of graduates.
